Our story | Mission statement | Projects
This is our story
A group of young men and women met one evening at the Dominican house in Karen-Langata,
1995 many of them had the desire of associating and living the spirit of St. Dominic. Some
of them were ex-seminarians some just had the desire.
This marked the beginning of the long and painful journey of Dominican Laity of
Nairobi. It was painful in that not everybody who came to our meeting actually shared the
same intention of becoming Dominicans. Many came and left. Our numbers could go up to 15
and sometimes fall back to 3.
This was mainly due to the high population of college going students in our group. In 1997 we changed our strategy and started targeting serious people, the young professionals. In 1998 with the facilitation of our Brother Don Goergen we developed a working document and had our first formal commitment by David, Paulacatherine and Emmanuel. In April 1999 we had the renewals and an addition of one more member John.
Today we meet in a Restaurant in the town center every last Sunday of the month and continue to share our faith.
Formation and formation material was our main problem but today we can say we have something, thanks to
William Sinkele(Fr.Bill) and Don Goergen and the Dominican Laity office of St. Albert.
We have also been able to attend two international meetings the 1996 meeting in Leone, Spain and 1997 meeting in Ocana, Spain courtesy of our Dominican friends in the USA and Europe. The experience we gathered from these meetings has been of great help in the development of our movement. However, we were not able to send a representative to the 1998 meeting in Ireland and we might not send any to this year's meeting in Holland due to financial strains.
As our vicariate is expanding to cover the whole of East Africa, the laity is also expanding, a new, group has started in Kisumu and seemingly it would be larger than the one in Nairobi. They meet at the St. Martin de Pores Dominican center in Kisumu under the patronage of Bro. Kieren Healey. By Gods grace, soon we shall be having our own regional laity meetings.
Dominican Laity of Nairobi is a movement of Catholic professionals, young and old who live a Dominican life of prayer, study, community and ministry.
Our objectives are: -
To be witnesses of the gospel by living what we
proclaim and promote lay preaching in the church.
To live more contemplatively and reflectively, and to
share our lives with each other
To be a social, critical and responsible presence in
the world.
We are starting a project, which will make us known to the region very fast. We intent to sell gospel audio CDs and cassettes (by Dominicans) in our parishes on rotational basis and at the same time distribution of free literature about Dominicans and donating alter flowers to the parishes. We shall embark on this project as soon as we are able to import the CDs and cassettes. We are very optimistic that, this project shall boost us.
Our target group.
The young professionals are now taking many positions of management and decision-making and so they remain our target group. From1995 to 1999 and still going stronger.
This is where we meet.
We meet every last Sunday of the month at AL-QASR RESTAURANT situated adjacent to DELPHIS BANK, koinange street, Nairobi city center.
